It’s All About Team for Abdulaziz Alkaabi

Abdulaziz Alkaabi is a sergeant in the Abu Dahbi National Police who was delighted to earn his second Silver medal in two trips to the World Police and Fire Games, competing in the Police Pistol Combat (Individual) - Semi-Automatic - Stock Service category. But when congratulated, he quickly beams and nods with more pride saying, “Yes. We have a great team!”

Indeed, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) had a great performance in Winnipeg in 2023. With a moderate delegation of 40 athletes, UAE finished with 80 medals (33 Gold,27 Silver, 20 Bronze) and the team ranked the #12 country in the overall medal count.

Abdulaziz’ performance was part of a podium sweep for UAE in their pistol category, along with Ahmed Alahbabi (Gold) and Salem Alkaabi (Bronze). Besides his shooting events, he notes that his teammates competed in swimming, running, triathlon, archery, crossfit, jiu-jitsu, and cycling. Asked if he is a role model, he replies that he and all of his teammates hope to inspire others.

The young first responder enjoys training with his teammates. “Salem is from the same tribe,” he says. “We work together, and we love the hobby of shooting.”

The excitement of traveling to compete was clearly showing on the 28-year-old in Winnipeg. “This is a beautiful organization and people. The competition is very good, as well as the accompanying events,” says Abdulaziz. “The tourism is good. I liked Canada and the people very much.”

Will Abdulaziz Alkaabi be coming to Birmingham to shoot for another medal in 2025? He answered with a smile in Arabic: “Inshallah!” (if God wills it!)
