INDIVIDUAL MIDDLE DISTANCE
The middle distance profile is technical. The emphasis is on the athletes’ ability to navigate in detailed terrain where finding the controls constitutes a challenge.
See map below for directions to the Oak Mountain State Park from Athletes' Village in Downtown Birmingham.
1. Can I register for more than one sport?
Where possible, you are welcome to compete in as many sports as you like. However, please keep in mind some sports may overlap in schedule. We DO NOT recommend registering for sports with overlapping schedules. Register for your primary sports and disciplines, then once the final schedule is released in May, you can register for additional sports as the schedule allows.
2. Who will I be competing against?
Men and women will compete against others of their gender in age groups of 5 years. See the Classes listed in the Events section.
3. How long will my course be?
Your course length is shown in the Events section. Course lengths are based on your age/gender (Class) as shown in the Events section.
4. What clothing is expected?
Long pants are required. Shirt style is optional. Shoes should be capable of running off trail and gripping on slick pine straw.
5. What equipment can I carry?
A whistle and compass are required. A thumb compass or baseplate compass is best. Cell phones are not allowed on the course. A hydration pack is acceptable. You will be issued a SportIdent e-stick, orienteering map and control description sheet at the start.
6. What is the terrain like?
Oak Mountain has parallel ridges and reentrants, fast open woods (mix of hardwood and pine) with an extensive trail network, lake, boulders, varying vegetation density and an altitude of 165m-250m (550ft-850ft). It is mostly open, runnable forest. Daytime temperatures reach or exceed 90°F/32°C with a potential for afternoon thunderstorms. Morning temperatures range from about 75°F/24°C to 85°F/29°C, with very high relative humidity.
7. What dangers might I encounter?
There are road crossings. Most will be monitored. Since you will be running off trail, expect some downed trees, tree stump holes, tripping vines and Poison Ivy. Permethrin on clothes and DEET on exposed body areas is recommended. Check for ticks when finished.
8. Will everyone start together?
No. Runners will start in timed intervals.
9. How much time do I have to finish?
You must return to the Finish in 120 minutes. You must punch the finish and download even if you do not complete the course.
