Hero’s Welcome
The World Police and Fire Games often helps bring recognition to competitors when they return home, as Pedro Ferrer and his wife Yolanda Dominguez learned when their hometown in southwest Spain put them on a platform.
In January, the mayor of Bonares presented the married couple with the city’s Golden Sports Award, which honored the 7 gold, 5 silver and 10 bronze medals they have won over the course of the past three WPFG events they have attended. Yolanda, 47, stepped up and earned 10 of those medals in Winnipeg in weightlifting, distance running and track and field events. Pedro, 51, is proud to win gold in the Men’s 50+ bench press since it was his first year to train for the event.
“These types of awards increase morale and the desire to practice sports in our jobs,” said Pedro, who is a sergeant in the Civil Guard Brigade. “It is very nice, since apart from sharing our personal and family life, we share our passion, which is sport.”
Yolanda, a Bonares police officer, added, “Our three children are very proud of their parents, and they follow the example we set playing sports.”
Both feel proud to bring positive attention to first responders in their country and community and can’t wait to go to Birmingham to collect more hardware!
