Athlete Spotlight: Tomasz Wankiewicz

Poland | Gliwice Fire Department

Polish Firefighter Has a Need for Speed

Tomasz Wankiewicz has many passions, and pursuing athletics is the strongest. The 33-year-old Polish firefighter has been training for 20 years, half of that focused on Crossfit. He is now a Level 1 Crossfit trainer and has his sights on international competition. This year Thomasz earned medals at the World Firefighter Championships in Aalborg, Denmark, the European Championships of Uniformed Services in Spain, and the European Championships in Portugal.

Now Tomasz has his sights set on the pinnacle of first responder events-his first World Police and Fire Games next year in Birmingham. “I like CrossFit because it helps me be a better firefighter,” he says. “Every day I give 100% to achieve success.  I can't wait to win a Gold medal and visit the Barber Motorsports Museum.”

What drives his transportation passion? “For me, the Barber museum is one of the most important places in the city that I would like to see because of my interest in motoring and following all the latest news,” he explains. “It’s full of history because it has the largest collection of motorcycles in the world.”

He is quick to add, “But my most important passion is sport, and I’ve been training for over 20 years, half of it in CrossFit. I also like javelin throwing, which I’ve been doing for three years.”

Tomasz also pours the passion into his career as a firefighter. “This is my calling. I am the first firefighter in my family,” he proclaims. “I want to be a role model.  I will represent my country with great pride!”
