The Climbing Cop
A unique part of the World Police and Fire Games (WPFG) is the events related to first responder skills, such as Ultimate Firefighter, Firefighter Challenge, Stair Climb, various shooting events and K-9 Biathlon, among others.
It’s not often that a cop would enter a firefighter-dominated event. Canadian Stacy Miskolczi, a detective with 19 years’ service with the Edmonton Police Service, defies the notion and finds excitement with one event. “I love the stair climb because I am usually the only police officer to race against firemen,” she exclaims. “I love the adrenaline rush of competing, and I like being known as the crazy cop who runs up tall buildings.”
This is no one-and-done on a lark. Stacy, 44, has been dominating her age groups capturing gold and silver stair climb medals for all but one WPFG since 2009. Her love for scrambling up straircases also goes beyond competing against firefighters as she travels to compete in tower running events around North America and looks forward each year to climbing 104 floors in New York’s Tunnels to Tower climb.
Stacy is whimsical about what motivates her. “I think it’s just because it’s something different that no one else does. Besides, the view at the top is always better, and you can’t see it without going up!”
Miskolczi has a special reason to be excited to come to Birmingham in 2025. “My aunt and uncle live there, so it will be nice to be able to compete in front of family,” she says. “Plus, I have heard such amazing things about the city and can't wait to check out the food and drink scene.”
Why did she enter police service? “I have always loved a challenge. I grew with a mom who was a nurse,” she explains. “Even tho I didn't go down that path I still followed the path of helping people. No two days are the same and I enjoy the connections you make with other agencies or departments.”
