Athlete Spotlight: Iranilmo Melo Lopes

Brazil | Escrivao de Policia Federal - Rio de Janeiro

An Experience Beyond His Dreams

As a child growing up in Rio de Janeiro, Iranilmo Melo Lopes never dreamed he would be traveling the world playing soccer as an adult. Like most of his friends, Soccer was just a fun sport that he loved to play. But he did dream of becoming a police officer.

Decades later, he is delighted to combine both passions as a member of the Brazilian National Soccer Team, which stays active in domestic and international competitions. The most meaningful event for them is the World Police & Fire Games, and he is proud his team has earned bronze medals in 2019 and 2022.

“Thank God I managed to make this dream of becoming a federal police officer come true,” he says. “It’s the greatest professional achievement of my life, and I thank the effort, dedication and influence of my parents. Participating in the World Police & fire Games is a source of great pride for my entire family.”

Iranilmo adds that his wife Christiane also shares his passion, creating the layouts of the team uniforms, managing competition schedules and preparing travel itineraries.

“It has been a sensational experience in every way,” he observes. “The ChengDu Games in 2019 were unforgettable, both for the competition and for the experience of getting to know Chinese culture up close. I am very proud of everything we do with our team, and I am grateful for every moment that has been experienced over the years in our competitions.”

Iranilmo also credits his ongoing soccer activity for his fitness and readinesss to serve. “Our main objective is to encourage integration and improve the quality of life of all members of our team,” he explains. “In addition to being an extremely competitive activity, it guarantees a huge improvement in the quality of life, given the need to be constantly prepared.”

He says the entire Brazilian National Soccer Team is excited to come to Birmingham to compete in the 35+ age category and enjoy visiting a new city and seeing familiar faces. “In addition to participating in the competition, we will once again have the opportunity to see the friends we have made over the years. I look forward to the Games!”
