California Police Athletic Federation and World Police & Fire Games Mourn the Loss of Firefighters in Idaho Tragedy

First responders from around the world stand together in grief and solidarity

Birmingham, Ala. — The California Police Athletic Federation (CPAF) and organizers of the 2025 World Police and Fire Games are deeply saddened by the tragic events that unfolded in northern Idaho, where two firefighters lost their lives and another was wounded after being ambushed while responding to a wildfire.

This heartbreaking attack is a stark reminder of the dangers first responders face — not only from natural disasters but also from unexpected violence in the line of duty.

“We acknowledge the gravity of what has happened, and everyone here at the Games feels the weight of this loss. Whether you wear a badge or turnout gear in Idaho, California, or anywhere around the world, we are part of one brotherhood and sisterhood. This tragedy impacts all of us," said Jim King, President, World Police & Fire Games Federation. "It brings heavy hearts to everyone here in Birmingham.”

Out of respect and solidarity, venues across the 2025 World Police and Fire Games will be honoring the fallen firefighters throughout the week. The Games, while a celebration of service and unity, are also a reflection of the sacrifices made by public safety professionals every day.

We stand with the families, agencies and communities grieving this unimaginable loss.
